At the time of composing his First Sextet, young Brahms was quite the rebel and turned against the so-called New German School: ‘This plague will only lengthen the ears of those donkeys.’ With his sextet, he put up a magnificent fight. The fact that the piece was well-received is confirmed by film director Louis Malle’s eagerness to use it in his classic Les Amants. The Andante plays with folk music that Brahms loved so much. Dvořák’s String sextet was awaited ‘with great anticipation’ at the time.
A delicious piece of apple pie is included in the ticket price. You are welcome to relax in our foyer before or after the concert. A free Channel Classics CD is included in the ticket price for this series!
