It didn’t take Jeangy Macrooy, who first came to Holland from Suriname in 2014, long to work his way through the Dutch musical landscape. He participated in Popronde, became 3FM Talent and did support acts for Blaudzun and Selah Sue among others. Furthermore, he is a regular guest on De Wereld Draait Door and performed at quite a few festivals like Lowlands, NN North Sea Jazz Festival and Noorderslag.
The man we hear on the debut-record High On You, seemingly still searching for his style, has grown up in the meantime, and gained confidence. Horizon has Macrooy presenting himself holding his head up high, full of curiosity and lust for life. In an interview with FaceCulture about this new record, he tells us the following: ‘We never really reach the horizon. I hope, as an artist, that I never reach a point where I think: this is it, let’s just keep doing it like this. I want to keep pushing myself to do things differently.’ His new album shows that he does, because it is overflowing with positive energy.
Jeangu Macrooy now knows better than ever what he wants: to tell a story as honestly as possible. Sometimes some gospel gets mixed in, for instance with his twin brother Xilan’s song Second Hand Lover. Macrooy’s warm and powerful soul voice combined with the catchy feelgood music seem to be the perfect format. His theater show sees his stories backed up by his music and him accompanied by his band.
Jeangu Macrooy was originally planned to perform on 23rd May in our small hall. Due to the measures taken around the corona virus outbreak, this concert has been rescheduled to Sunday 8th November and then to 24th September in our main hall. All ticket holders have been informed personally and given further information.
I have grown up during the past few years, musically as well as personally. That’s what the show is about. A coming of age story.
