With cheering angels, excited sheperds and a generous dollop of motherly love Bach joined the Christmas tradition to musically stage Jesus' arrival on earth. Each cantata on its own day, rushing between the Thomas and Nikolai church for the morning service and in the afternoon a repeat for Evensong. For the music Bach simply borrowed the greatest hits from his own repertoire, like the ode to Queen Maria Jospha, electress of Saxony.

The first three cantatas voice the redeeming birth and the proclamation to the sheperds, followed by the story of Herod cunningly sending the Three Wise Men on their way. Around Bach's festive music two lesser known gems will be performed: Buxtehude's tender choral motet In Dulce Jubilo and the first movement of a lushious cantata by Gottfried Heinrich Stölzel.
