Maria João Pires (Lisbon, 1944) gave her first public performance at the age of four. When she was seven, she was playing Mozart piano concertos for audiences. Her international breakthrough came in 1970 when she won the International Beethoven Bicentennial Competition in Brussels. Since then she has performed all over the world. She has regularly collaborated with Claudio Abbado and appears with orchestras such as the Wiener and Berliner Philharmoniker and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. In 1989 she signed an exclusive contract with Deutsche Grammophon. Her recordings include Beethoven’s piano sonatas, Schubert’s complete impromptus and the complete Nocturnes and other works by Chopin. In 2006 she moved to Brazil.
