A word of warning: it’s quite likely that you and Maria João Pires disagree. She only performs occasionally and you feel that’s a pity. So it’s an absolutely unique opportunity to hear the Portuguese pianist again in Eindhoven. Every concert of hers is an experience. Neue Zürcher Zeitung wrote of her 20-CD Deutsche Gramophon box set: ‘Milestones. As simple as her playing seems, it is full of inner life. Full of fantasy, a sense of ‘singing lines’ and spatial soundscapes: poetic and extraordinarily musical.’

Maria João Pires (Lisbon, 1944) gave her first public performance at the age of four. When she was seven, she was playing Mozart piano concertos for audiences. Her international breakthrough came in 1970 when she won the International Beethoven Bicentennial Competition in Brussels. Since then she has performed all over the world. She has regularly collaborated with Claudio Abbado and appears with orchestras such as the Wiener and Berliner Philharmoniker and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. In 1989 she signed an exclusive contract with Deutsche Grammophon. Her recordings include Beethoven’s piano sonatas, Schubert’s complete impromptus and the complete Nocturnes and other works by Chopin. In 2006 she moved to Brazil.

To keep waiting times down to an absolute minimum, this concert will make use of the 'wallet-less intermission' concept. Visitors are asked to pay for their intermission drink in advance when ordering their tickets: the perfect solution for enjoying your company and your drink as long as possible!

Elk concert van Pires is een belevenis.
