If you link your name to Russia’s greatest composer, you are entitled to set the bar high. For most, Moscow’s Tchaikovsky Competition is simply a bridge too far. How often is the first prize not even awarded? Once, the ‘winner’ of the cello category was awarded the fourth prize. 

Thankfully, last year at the 16th edition a clear winner was chosen: flautist Matvey Demin. And he was also awarded the much-coveted Golden Medal too. Denim won in the newly added category of wood instruments.
