With minute precision and superhuman skill, guitarists’ fingers coax the most beautiful tones from their instruments. But this requires years of intensive training. Excelling on the classical guitar is not trivial. For over fifty years now, one of the world’s foremost classical guitar competitions has been held in the little Italian town of Alessandria. Any great talent will certainly rise to the top during the annual Michele Pittaluga International Guitar Competition.

In 1968, the renowned musicologist Michele Pittaluga established the competition in order to enable classical guitar music to bask a little more in the Mediterranean sun. It is an intimate and yet intense competition, whose jury in its early years was headed by guitar legends like Andrés Segovia and Alirio Diaz. Famous competition winners of the past include Edoardo Catemario, Flavio Sala, Irina Kulikova and Kazuhito Yamashita. The competition winners are offered a tour and a recording contract with Naxos. The brand-new winner of the 2020 competition will be with us to strum their strings this afternoon.
