Arvo Pärt’s monumental choral work Kanon Pokajanen is a deeply religious request for forgiveness. Wonderful music for Easter, in Church Slavonic. ‘Have mercy’ and ‘Praise the Lord’ are the choruses of this meditative piece, written to commemorate the 750th anniversary of Cologne Cathedral. The glowing effect of the voices floating around one another is spellbinding. Book titles such as ‘Stil de tijd’ (Stop Time Still) and ‘Melancholie van de onrust’ (The Melancholy of Restlessness) indicate how seamlessly Joke Hermsen’s texts align with Pärt.
