It goes without saying that being left with only one arm at the end of WWI was an unbearable tragedy. For the Viennese pianist Paul Wittgenstein, however, this was no reason to end his career.

On the contrary, the gritty pianist (brother of Wittgenstein the philosopher) commissioned Ravel to compose his Piano Concerto for the left hand. He also approached Prokofiev, Strauss and Erich Wolfgang Korngold for music that suited his unique combination of handicap and talent. The amazing Korngold produced a masterly suite that breathes the atmosphere of Fin-de-siècle Vienna.

This concert comes with a delicious slice of apple pie and a cup of tea or coffee.
