Picturesque and magic music full of colourful nuance

The savage struggles that Russia had to go through are magnificently depicted in Dmitry Shostakovich’s oeuvre. If his Seventh and Eighth Symphonies were of a more tragic persuasion, his moving Ninth commands a rather cheerful character. Dmitry Liss salutes his favourite composer.

No doubt, his Ninth will be a triumph that will conjure up smiles on every face, especially when you recognise Shostakovich’s sneaky stabs at Stalin. But before that, Liss and the South Netherlands Philharmonic present an undeniably adventurous calling card. Olivier Messiaen’s overture will be conjoined with the Dutch première of the violin concerto La joie de la souffrance by Chinese master composer Qigang Chen, Messiaen’s very last pupil. Picturesque and magic music full of colourful nuance and enchanting stillness.

To keep waiting times down to an absolute minimum, this concert will make use of the 'wallet-less intermission' concept. Visitors are asked to pay for their intermission drink in advance when ordering their tickets: the perfect solution for enjoying your company and your drink as long as possible!
