Already back in the 80's Philip Kroonenberg and Ad Vanderveen went to the States together, by the name of Personnel, to recor an album with bass legend Leland Sklar. After that he made a few wonderful cd's under his own name which got some extremely good press. He recently signed with Excelsior.
In the years prior to Personnel he played, as a true The Hagueian, with all sorts of well known boys from The Hague, Living Blues musicians and Eelco Geling of Cuby among them, under the name Freelance band; back then still with Aad van Pijlen on bass who is now included in this new trio as well. Their strong groove, in the swampy louisiasna tradition, is simply unprecedented. With not too many solos but with a deep rhythm, drummer Sjoerd van Bommel is the motor behind it all. Especially for the true listener, these gentlemen have arranged some beautiful little songs to satisfy the need for intimacy. But however little, in the end the swing is still enormous. Philip with his unparalleled fingerpicking, Aad as the deeply roaring baseline and Sjoerd as a free drummer/percussionist. Not to mention their great multi-vocals.
The guys have reached the age where the need to muck about has been left behind, which now has them going straight to the core of the business. Simple but profound!
Every Monday, we present concerts with singer-songwriters, acoustic bands, rootsy performers and other gems from the music world.
