Boccherini came from Lucca, Tuscany. He worked throughout Italy, later in Vienna, Paris and Berlin. But he spent the best part of his life in Spain. He was an incredibly gifted cellist. There was no cellist in Europe able to play so high on the cello. The story goes that he learned to play those high notes because he played in an ensemble with a violinist who was ill a lot of the time. To not let this get into the way of any concerts, Boccherini decided to play the violin part high up on his cello.

The sheer number of compositions he wrote is quite daunting, among them more than 150 quintets, over a 100 quartets and no less than 12 cello concertos. Number 9 from that series of concertos, the one in G composed around 1770, is compulsive rerpertoire on most music academies because it covers all the celle registers. An attractive display for cello virtuosos like Casals, Starker, Jacqueline du Pré and Yo-Yo Ma, each of whom recorded it.
