Flamenco Criollo, a commissioned work produced by Flamenco Biënnale Nederland and written by acclaimed Cuban composer and pianist Aruán Ortiz is a unique work that attempt to revisit and celebrate the musical journey of melodies and forms that migrated to colonial Cuba and the Caribbean via Spain from the 17th to 18th century until today, tracing the lineage that connect all these styles into one musical expression.

‘Aruán Ortiz is one of the most versatile and exciting pianists of his generation’ schreef Downbeat over zijn soloalbum Cub(an)ism, en beoordeelde het met vijf sterren. Ortiz migreerde in 2008 van Cuba naar New York en bouwde snel een flinke naam op met werk voor o.a. jazz ensembles, orkesten, kamermuziek en films. In zijn werk komt jazz en klassiek samen, met een knipoog naar zijn Cubaanse roots.
