Dmitry Shostakovich can ben seen as the 20th century Beethoven. Grand in his symphonies but the most personal in his string quartets. He wrote a series of 15 between 1938 and 1974. One could listen to them as a diary of a split life. Shostakovich had to adhere to the demands of the Soviet dictatorship, but he couldn't help but express what lived inside him. His loneliness as well as the struggle of an indiviual against the supreme power of the state can be heard in his emotional string quartet music.
