On the programme Schubert's last and longest quartet. As violist Schubert informally played a run-through of it with some friends and the first movement has been performed in a concert - but that was it. This quartet didn't get published until twentythree years after his death!
Fauré finally plucked up the courage to write a string quartet when he was in his late seventies. And he did it in secret, because he was just too worried about the comparison with Beethoven. The music is very modest, its center of gravity lies in the slow movement with a heartbreaking melody for the viola. The quartet finishes cheerfully, almost exuberbant.
A selection of cheeses & a glass of wine (or an alternative) are included in the ticket price.
