Young Islandic pianist Víkingur Ólafsson (1984) already released nine cd's and has a contract with Deutsche Grammophon since 2016. 'Island's Glenn Gould' The New York Times called him. The Gramophone, naming him 'Artist of the Year' sayd it differently: "Like Glenn Gould Olafsson has this rare gift to shed light on a familiar piece in such an unexpected way that it suddenly creates new depths bringing out the very best of the piece". This special gift comes in handy for this concert, because Grieg's one and only piano concerto has become a standard work. With a work like this can one can easily think "ah, yes" and then lose focus so that the real beauty of the piece is lost.
This programme has Prokofiev's humorous suite "The Love for Three Oranges", with the funny march, and Rachmaninov's last finished work, the colourfully instrumented Symphonic Dances, sitting on either side of Grieg's piano concerto. Ample opportunities for the orchestra to show us what sound colouring is has to offer.
