We don't hear her very often these days, her performances have become relatively rare. The Penguin Guide wrote about her complete set of Mozart's piano sonatas (she plays one of them now too): 'Maria Joao Pires is a stylist and an outstanding Mozartian. She is always refined, never lacking in classical feeling and she possesses a lively imagination. She strikes an ideal balance between poise and expressive sensitivity, communicating a sense of spontaneity in everything she does.'

Sometimes history comes really close. At the Musée de l'Orangerie, for instance, we can see with our own eyes, in a painting by Renoir, the young woman Yvonne Lerolle for whom Debussy composed the Sarabande and the Toccata from his Pour le piano. Music in which Debussy showed revealed himself as the true Debussy for the first time. With the Sonata in B-flat, Schubert just concluded his oeuvre for piano. He had seven weeks left to live when he wrote this sonata, his most played. Can you hear that reflected? It is a rich, mature work; hardly anyone could make the piano sing the way Schubert could.
