The Cockaigne Overture (opus 40), subtitled In London Town, is a 1900 composition by Edward Elgar and was first performed on 20 June 1901. The title of the piece refers to the land of Kokanje, Cockaigne, which Elgar uses as a metaphor for London at the time of King Edward VII, seen through the eyes of a young couple.
Symphony No 5 in D major/D minor, better known as the Reformation symphony, was composed in 1830 by Felix Mendelssohn in honour of the 300th presentation of the Augsburg Confession, an important document of Lutheranism. Very well known is the chorale theme "A firm fortress is our God" preceding the fourth movement.
Symfonieorkest Eindhoven has managed to secure its own unique place in the Eindhoven musical landscape over the past decades. Most members of the orchestra are (advanced) amateurs, while a number have a professional musical background. The orchestra performs several times a year, both within and outside the region, often with leading soloists and choirs from home and abroad.
For the Love of Music
This concert is part of the For the Love of Music project. Club life is an important social-cultural engine of our society. We think this is important and therefore we are happy to make our halls available to anyone who loves music: creators, artists and musicians from Eindhoven and the region.
