Since Buffalo Nichols first fell in love with the guitar, he has had a mission: how to bring traditional blues into the future. Nichols wanted to weave stories of black people with the folk and blues styles. "I hope more black people can recognise themselves in this music that really comes from them," Buffalo said of his debut album. His second album, The Fatalist, is truly a surprise. With 808 programming, sampled snippets of Charley Patton and layered synth sounds, he creates a unique soundscape. Next-level blues, so to speak, that goes beyond mere experimentation.

Nichols manages to merge the blues with everyday life in 2023, not only through the instruments he uses, but also through the complexity of his lyrics and the new sounds he explores. Nichols' work is always firmly rooted in the now. On The Fatalist, he digs deeper into issues of responsibility and personal identity, with his lyrics touching and challenging the listener. His deep, raw baritone voice is similar to Leonard Cohen's, giving the lyrics a dramatic intensity. The result is a compelling mix of sometimes dark and intoxicating, sometimes light and vibrant atmospheres.
