‘But if one cannot bring history to life, […] then it will always remain abstract…’ This sentence coms from a motto in the front of the book Baltische zielen by Jan Brokken. Brokken knows ‘bringing things to life’ like no other.

He writes about people who leave the comforts of home in search of freedom and happiness. During this scherpdenkers evening with the Berlage Saxofoon Quartet, these stories go hand in hand with music about quests for freedom. Moving works by Schulhoff, Shostakovich, Pärt, Eisler and Kurdish composer Hawar Tawfiq, who made a lasting impression on TV programme Podium Witteman with the story of his flight. Jan Brokken contributes from his masterpieces In het huis van de dichter, Baltische zielen and De kozakkentuin.

Ik ben gek op Sjostakovitsj, en heel benieuwd naar de Koerdisch-Nederlandse componist Hawar Tawfiq. Een avond die een hoogst actuele thematiek verbeeldt in klank en woord.
