Brahms’ Piano Concerto No. 2 has distinct symphonic proportions. One of its loveliest melodies is not played by the piano, but by the first cellist in the opening measures of the Andante.

When conductor Andrew Manze heard Sibelius’ Second Symphony for the very first time as a teenager he was instantly enthralled by this music. ‘Sibelius is sometimes thought of as dark and sombre, but the radiant melody with which the piece ends still gives me goosebumps’, says Manze about this Finnish masterpiece.
