Culture in times of conflict
‘Culture gives people perspective, because it helps them realise they are human’, according to Petra Stienen. She is an Arabist, independent advisor and First Member of Parliament for the D’66. For years she has been establishing culture projects in conflict areas in the Middle East. With her so-called Action for Hope she is putting her words into action. Not to comfort people, but to give them back their self-esteem.

Tonight she talks about all this in Culture in times of conflict. Her story is strengthened by the women of the Ragazze Quartet. This classical string quartet is keen to explore boundaries in collaborations with artists and theatre-makers. They play string quartets by minimal-music hero Steve Reich, which include spoken text fragments. The voices of witnesses of World War II and 9/11 creep under your skin. Who are these individuals, in the middle of this debris and violence?
