‘Magnetizing […] the audience jumped up and cheered him on as if he were a rock star.’ Vadim Kholodenko, who in 2013 won the 14th edition of the Van Cliburn International Competition. In the final round he performed a magnificent rendition of Mozart’s piano concerto KV467; he had ‘just’ written the brilliant cadenza (‘the courage of a true super artist’) in the airplane. So the Golden Medal was completely deserved. ‘We want a true artist that touches the listener’s heart,’ is now the credo of the Van Cliburg, the most prominent American piano competition. Numerous invitations followed and Kholodenko took to the stage with Yuri Bashmet, Vladimir Spivakov and Mark Gorenstein. His recordings also speak for themselves, such as his CD with Liszt, Rachmaninoff and Nikolaj Medtner for the Russian TV Culture label.
