"A symphony should be like the world; it must embrace everything," said Gustav Mahler. And how all-encompassing is his First Symphony. Awakening from misty morning moods, through blaring fanfares, captivating melodies, and a melancholic funeral march, leading to the stormy and triumphant finale.

A typical Mahler piece with impressions from his birthplace and surroundings. It continues the exceptional work from before the intermission, which also describes cultures: Concerto for String Orchestra and Pipa by composer Tan Dun, featuring soloist Gao Hong. A pipa is a Chinese lute. The work quotes from Bach, initially literally by the strings, then transformed into a Chinese variant and ultimately played on the pipa. Tan Dun skillfully achieves a unique synthesis with great bravado, resulting in brilliant, highly convincing, and engaging music.
