Bach's St Matthew Passion
by The Netherlands Bach SocietyClassical HighlightsTue 19 Mar ’24Good Friday, April 14, 1922. It is with conductor Johan Schoonderbeek that Bach's St. Matthew Passion is performed in Naarden. A memorable date because a new ensemble and a new tradition are born: the Nederlandse Bachvereniging and their annual performance of the St. Matthew Passion at Easter. Only half a century earlier, the St. Matthew Passion had sounded in the Netherlands for the first time.... But we have since caught up: Bach's greatest work is now heard every Easter in more than a hundred places around the country. With Naarden and the Nederlandse Bachvereniging at the forefront; it has grown into a large event over and over again, with members of the cabinet and other dignitaries eagerly making their appearance.

Schubert's Ninth: the 'Great'Fri 22 Mar ’24There seems to be no end to Schubert's Ninth. Thankfully so. Because (you have been warned!) if you hear it live, chances are you will go into a trance. Then you only want one thing: for it never to end. A symphony of heavenly dimensions, said fellow composer Schumann. He discovered the score after Schubert's death in a chest of drawers at his brother's house. It remains a mystery how the mortally ill Schubert could write something so beautiful months before his death. And he was barely thirty-one.

Hup Herman! (3+)
Een feestelijke voorleesopera die de fantasie prikkelt!Pancake concertSat 23 Mar ’24This concert is spoken entirely in Dutch.

Amsterdam Sinfonietta & Janine Jansen
Janine Jansen performs solo in Bach's violin concertosInternational top orchestrasSat 23 Mar ’24'Her Bach encore was beautifully ornamented, extraordinarily tasteful and delicately executed.' The Strad, describing Janine Jansen's Bach. Earlier that evening, she had played Brahms' violin concerto with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra and Jaap van Zweden, with the audience interrupting her with thunderous applause after each movement. 'She elicited an intense and rich sound from her instrument, and the impressive control of her bow and her technical mastery allowed her to draw long phrases regardless of technical difficulty. Each note seemed to grow out of the one before it and connect with the next in a remarkable way.' Yes - you're Holland's greatest violinist or you're not.
There will be a free concert introduction at 19:30, co-sponsored by the Muziekgebouw Eindhoven Friends Association.-

Master pianist plays Beethoven, Debussy & RachmaninovSmall Hall on SundaySun 24 Mar ’24'It is still possible, to be completely bowled over by a CD.' Wrote music magazine Luister about Marietta Petkova's recording of Rachmaninov's preludes. 'Under the hands of the Bulgarian-Dutch pianist, each of them grows into testimonies of an eventful life, offering deep glimpses into the creator's soul.' The disc was honoured with a 10 out of 10. It suited the pianist, who had already baffled her audience in the year 2000 with a memorable Rachmaninov recital at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam: 'Grandiose Petkova,' wrote the Telegraaf, and NRC Handelsblad: 'Pianist Petkova: ideal Rachmaninov.'
