Enchanting timbres, captivating melodies, and a hint of oriental spices: these are the ingredients that make Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's orchestral suite Sheherazade such a beloved work. The composition is based on Thousand and One Nights: a collection of Arabian folk tales. To escape execution, Sheherazade tells the sultan stories for one thousand and one nights. Rimsky-Korsakov takes the listener through Sinbad's sea voyage and encounters with extraordinary characters, leading to a whirlwind celebration in Baghdad.
