During BRIDGE Guitar Festival, you'll encounter not only the traditional guitar but also numerous other exceptional string instruments. The Gambian singer-songwriter Sona Jobarteh is renowned for her virtuosity on the kora, a West African string instrument that could be described as a combination of a harp and a guitar. As the first female virtuoso on the kora, she is a pioneer in a tradition that has been passed down exclusively from father to son for the past seven centuries. Jobarteh is internationally recognized for her eclectic mix of blues, afropop, and traditional music. She will be returning to Eindhoven for the opening of BRIDGE Guitar Festival 2024!

Sona comes from a Griot family, which means she belongs to a tradition of West African poets, musicians, and storytellers who have played a crucial role in the transmission of knowledge and history through generations. And she takes her role in it very seriously! In addition to her musical career, Sona Jobarteh is deeply committed to education and cultural preservation. She has initiated various educational programmes and led workshops to pass on the knowledge of the kora and the Griot tradition to younger generations.
