Cristina Branco
Portuguese fado singerWed 1 May ’24Comparisons with Amália Rodrigues appear recurring and inevitable. Branco is known for seamlessly pairing tradition with fado innovation. In doing so, she seeks freedom in music, but with the emotional depth of the genre. Through her modern approach to traditional fado, enriching it with jazz, world music and pop, she has developed a completely unique style. The performer has been a much-loved personality on Dutch stages for years and has collaborated with BLØF, among others, in the past. This year, Cristina once again dives into the studio to surprise and entertain her audience with new music and a new show.

Lunchtime concert
FAA Composition ClassThu 2 May ’24It's spring, and not only the birds are singing a new song. Jonatan Repokari and Kiete van der Laan, composition students at Fontys Academy of the Arts in Tilburg, both created a series of songs that differ like day and night but are both about love. Repokari's "Kultaiset linnut" (Golden Birds) is about a woman mourning her lost or unattainable love. In his characteristic lyrical musical language, Repokari captures the protagonist's emotions, tossed back and forth between hope and sorrow.

McKinley James
Mix of Motown soul and bluesAmericana MondaysMon 6 May ’24Named after McKinley Morganfield, better known as Muddy Waters, it's not surprising that McKinley James became a musician. Especially when you're the son of Jason Smay, the drummer for JD McPherson. You could say that roots music runs in McKinley's veins. Perhaps that's why, despite his young age, he sounds like a true blues veteran. His style is best described as a blend of Stax and Motown soul with the blues of Magic Sam and Otis Rush. Accompanied by his father on drums, he'll be performing in Eindhoven.

Inside the Masterpiece
Delve into the ingenuity of one of the most famous masterpiecesInteractive lectureWed 8 May ’24The concept of music masterpiece seems to be as old as times. Distinguished from the rest of the pieces by its superior quality, the masterpiece is grabbing the attention of the audience with its undivided everlasting authority, having no need to prove itself anymore… What an honor, luck and privilege it is to be the one of those that survives through centuries! Just imagine: if you are the masterpiece, you are performed over and over again, receive endless musical interpretations and recordings, you are explored and discussed, admired and respected, and you earn very good money.
But what does the category of masterpiece actually imply? Is a predetermined fate or a coincidence for a newly born opus to join the masterpiece club? What qualities are making the musical piece good enough for being granted with such a high title? Besides, does it always play into the hands of the music? It would be unfair to promise straight-forward answers to all of these questions. But a few particular cases from the ashes of music history can give a glimpse into what the answers could be… In this interactive lecture, music theorist Asja Zakhareva will try to shine light on this question, drawing examples from one of the most beloved masterpieces of all time: Dvořák's New World Symphony.

Hélène Grimaud
Master pianist plays Beethoven, Brahms & BachGreat PianistsFri 10 May ’24Will she feel at home in the Netherlands especially in the Veluwe? After all, that is where wolves now prowl and devour sheep after sheep. Or will it still be the concert hall, preferably Muziekgebouw Eindhoven, with a beautiful Steinway-D grand piano and a breathless audience? French pianist Hélène Grimaud is at home in both worlds. The one full of wilderness, where the particular wild animal is the most powerful. And the one of culture, where man rules and strives to bring structure.

Tijs Klaassen Quintet
Open improvisation meets classical soundsBlue Note ClubSessionsSat 11 May ’24Tijs Klaassen is a name to remember. Over the past few years, the bassist has become a prominent figure in the Dutch jazz scene. His own band embodies his creative approach to a traditional jazz quintet lineup. The band's sound allows plenty of room for improvisation, but at times, it also draws inspiration from the sounds of classical composers like Theo Loevendie, Ravel, and Alban Berg. Arco bass melodies, woodwind instruments, and the use of electronics all come together in the ensemble's distinctive sound. Each band member is deeply involved in the creative process in their own way, resulting in a very unique group sound.
